Miami University Isn’t in Miami—It’s in Ohio

Miami University may sound like it’s in Florida’s sun-soaked Miami, but it’s actually located in Oxford, Ohio, near Cincinnati—thousands of miles from the coastal city. Founded in 1809, it ranks among America’s 30 oldest universities.

Instead of turquoise waters and sandy beaches, the campus is surrounded by sprawling cornfields, a stark contrast to the tropical imagery its name evokes. This geographical quirk stems from early 19th-century naming choices, long before Miami, Florida, became a famous destination.

Despite the misnomer, the university boasts a rich history and strong academic reputation, proving that a name’s association doesn’t define a place’s identity. It’s a reminder that geographical labels can sometimes lead to delightful surprises.
